regrets from love ? – 自古多情終懷恨

one of my favorite old Chinese quotes,  meaning,

“from the dawn of time,  loving a person  (who  does not  or  cannot  love back)
 would ultimately end up with (nothing but) regrets”

But love is love,  not some object one can hold back.  I believe there is nothing wrong to love an unavailable person,  as long as it is expressed through wishing him/her well and helping him/her whenever one can,  without asking for anything in return.

another version :  多情自古空餘恨

自古  =  from the dawn of time,        多情 =  having a lot of love,         恨 =   regrets
終 =  ultimately,       懷 =  have;             終懷恨 =  ultimately end up with regrets
空 =  nothing,           餘 =   remains;      空餘恨 =   nothing remains but regrets
