A Chinese children book explains why lion is not one of the 12 animals in the Zodiac – lion is already the king and has no need to ask Buddha to let it be one of the 12 guarding animals !!! something wrong ??? 
There are actually no native lions in China! (not even in zoos until recent times)
So, lion would definitely not be on the list!
P.S. You may ask, ”how about Dragon in Chinese Zodiac?” Although Chinese dragons do not exist, they are probably the imagination of people after encountering big dinosaur bones.
