a common word in Chinese culture (especially among older people), originated from Chinese Buddhism, meaning,
“doing good things will earn good fortune, doing bad things will receive bad luck”
example of good karma :
A friend is doing well in investments and getting good bonuses from job currently, probably the result of lending and giving money to friends in need over many years
example of bad karma (old Chinese belief) :
those not treating their parents well will not be treated well by their children in the future
Note: I am emphasizing the key words “over many years” in red, because karma usually won’t happen the next day
